A. "The first time I went skindiving. The beautiful colours under the water were unbelievable."
Luke Halpin, child star of the original "Flipper" movies and TV shows
Mavericks Diving London instructors Andrew Pugsley and Steve Warren
are keen and experienced snorkellers---in fact Steve's first instructor
qualification was through the National Snorkellers Club way back in '82.
Andrew and Steve don't just enjoy snorkelling, it's also the skill
they've relied on to dive out of the cages with great whites and to
video and photograph pilot whales. A Mavericks Diving snorkelling
course will introduce you to the techniques that will make snorkelling
or skindiving easier for you. You'll begin by getting used to your
snorkelling equipment. To enjoy snorkelling in warm water all you'll
need are a mask, fins and a snorkel. If you don't already own these,
Mavericks will be pleased to loan them free of charge for
your course. We'll also lend you a shorty wetsuit for your comfort in
the tank.
The setting for your course is the fabulous Action Underwater Studios. Action Underwater Studios is a dedicated facility for filming underwater sequences for the movies and tv. Motion pictures filmed at Action Underwater Studios include the Bond, Bourne and Harry Potter blockbusters. While visiting Action Underwater Studios you'll get to see the company show reel and learn some of the secrets behind the shooting of some of the world's most memorable action sequences. The Action Underwater Studios filming tank provides an entirely private location for Mavericks Diving London's snorkelling course. The attraction of this unique facility is that the 10 x 12 m (32 x 40 ft) filming tank is fully 6 m (20 ft) deep. This provides the depth we need to really work on your snorkelling skills. The water is always pleasantly warm and gin clear.
During your snorkel training course you'll be coached by NAUI Worldwide diving instructors Steve and Andrew. You'll learn to use your fins properly in order to swim with minimum effort and how to move quietly through the water so as not to frighten off marine life. We will teach you the mask and middle ear equalisation methods that will let you easily deal with pressure issues as you submerge. You'll learn to extend your breathold time, so you can stay down longer to observe the underwater world. You'll also learn the duck diving techniques that will let you easily glide to the bottom of the tank. On your Mavericks Diving snorkelling course you will also learn a few fun mobility tricks and, if you want to, Steve and Andrew will teach you basic rescue including resuscitation on our special in-water training mannequin. And just for fun, you can even fly a high speed diver propulsion vehicle.
Why not add an introduction to scuba diving to complete your day?
Action Underwater Studios features individual changing rooms with showers for your comfort and on site free parking.
To book this course we recommend you get in touch by phone, e-mail, or by dropping into the shop to discuss the requirements. If you've already done that, you can download the booking form (editable pdf).
