Digital Compact Open Day
with Ocean Optics-Mavericks Diving and Ocean Visions
2007 July 14 (Saturday)

Digital compact cameras have made underwater photography affordable. And getting stunning results is certainly achievable even by a beginner---if you know the right techniques. This special open day is designed to fast track you to early success if you are a newbie and to show experienced digital photographers how to push their imagery to the very limits.

Ocean Optics-Mavericks Diving has invited Ocean Visions to bring their special flare and expertise to this event and they will be making four presentations throughout our open day that will guide and inspire you. Ocean Visions was founded by Maria Munn specifically to help digital compact photographers to realise their underwater photography ambitions. Maria has won a reputation for teaching straightforward, no-nonsense techniques that cut through the bull and ensure that if you follow her advice you'll get photographs to be proud of. Maria has been an acclaimed speaker at two of our Adventures in Diving presentations.

Joining Maria is professional underwater photographer Gerald Rambert. Gerald's imagery is simply stunning. He has represented his native Mauritius in the World Underwater Photography Championships and shoots regular assignments for the British magazine Diver. Gerald, like Maria, often shoots on D-SLR cameras, but it is his imaginative use of compact digital systems that will challenge you to shoot for the top. Gerald was a guest presenter at our annual underwater photography festival, Visions in the Sea last year and his portfolio was a showstopper.

Maria will begin the day's talks with an introduction to getting started in digital compact photography. This will show you a little of what these inexpensive cameras can achieve and provide a taster of what's to come later on in the day.

Gerald will then take over with a presentation on advanced techniques using strobes and macro, wide angle and fisheye lenses. This will show you how combining these accessories with a little imagination can create professional level images to be proud of.

Maria will then take to the stage to explain the black art of post image manipulation. She'll show you how to process your photographs on your computer to draw out the best possible results. Its essential knowledge that can make or break an image.

Gerald will then provide our final talk of the day. He will discuss the thinking that goes into producing great images. You'll learn how Gerald chooses his subjects, how he thinks about lighting and how he composes each image for maximum impact.

Throughout the day, there'll be time to talk individually with Maria and Gerald. You are welcome to bring your laptop with no more than ten images for them to look at, if you'd like some one to one coaching on the day. This is on a first come, first served basis!

This is going to be a fantastic event that no digital compact underwater photographer should miss. We expect to announce the date shortly, but it is expected to be on a Saturday in July. It is strongly recommended that you register your interest now as the presentations will be by ticket only and are likely to be over subscribed.

The Ocean Optics-Mavericks Diving team and Maria and Gerald of Ocean Visions look forward to your company...
